Mercury – Let people know of warnings so they can make healthy choices:
The public has a right to know about which fish are safe to eat, and which contain high levels of mercury, so they can pick healthy fish to eat. Exposure to mercury can impact the developing brains and nervous systems of children and babies and lead to permanent brain damage, delays in walking and talking, sensory deficits and learning disabilities.
Posting the Food and Drug Administration warning at grocery stores will help people make safe choices. This is especially important for pregnant women, nursing mothers and parents of young children. Taking in mercury increases cardiac risks for adult men.
Grocery store shark, king mackerel, swordfish and tilefish are the fish that have had high mercury levels, and the FDA has had warnings in place for years now.
